How to Find Salvation
What if everything we assumed about who deserves God's favor is completely upside down? That is exactly the unsettling and liberating question at the heart of Luke 18:9-30. In this passage, we encounter three vivid stories that challenge our deepest assumptions about righteousness, importance, and wealth. A morally disciplined religious leader walks away from prayer still lost in his sin, while a despised, corrupt tax collector walks away justified and forgiven. Children, considered socially insignificant, are held up as the model for entering God's kingdom. A wealthy ruler who has kept the commandments since youth goes away sorrowful, while fishermen who have left everything behind are promised abundance. The spiritual lesson running through all three is both confronting and freeing: salvation is not found in what we have done, who we are, or what we possess. It is found only when we stop trusting in ourselves and cast every last hope on the mercy of God. For those of us carrying guilt, pride, or anxiety about the future, this passage speaks directly to our condition and points us toward the only source of true and lasting life.
